Fundamentals of Self Defence
This presentation gives an outline of what martial arts and combat sports are, how they compare to consensual and non-consensual violence, and then goes through the framework of 'self defence'.
The presentation is specifically designed for those people interested in the self defence course. Note there are a couple of graphic videos not suitable for children hence the video is age restricted. This presentation is part of the Cold War Combatives course - it is advisable for anyone interested in the course to familiarise themselves with the information within the presentation.

• Please do not take photos or videos of other members and post them to social media or the internet without their consent.
• Please do not take photos or videos of training in the programs taught at the Hobart Jujutsukan without the express consent of the head instructor.
• Please do not post photos or videos of training in the programs taught at the Hobart Jujutsukan to social media or the internet.
• Please inform the head instructor if you do not want your image appearing on social media pages relating to the Hobart Jujutsukan.
• Please keep in mind that martial arts related information on the internet is often dubious. Please do not add to this problem.
• Please do not engage in open criticism of other martial arts or martial artists over social media or the internet.
• Should you come across criticism of the Hobart Jujutsukan or its programs on social media or the internet, please do not respond. You may forward the item to your instructor but do not engage in defence of the school or program.
• As an element of self-defence, members are encouraged to take their privacy, data-footprint, and social media presence seriously.
Simplified Health & Safety Policy
• You must comply with COVID19 instructions and policies of the facilitator, training venue, Department of Health, Local Council, State Government, and Federal Government.
• You should inform the instructor before class of any relevant medical issue, including changes to the medical information provided at registration.
• You should inform the instructor immediately if you are injured during class.
• If an injury is not mentioned at the time it occurred, it is deemed the injury did not happen at the club.
• If you believe what you have been directed to do is unsafe, or begin to feel unsafe during the course of training, you should stop immediately and discuss with the instructor.
• You should undertake training only as directed by the instructor of the class.
• You should avoid practicing without the supervision of a qualified instructor.
• Do not attempt to teach anyone anything without being qualified to do so – teaching licenses will be issued to those qualified to teach.
• Please make every effort to not bleed on the mats and ensure biohazards are cleaned properly.
• Do not attend class if you are suffering from a communicable disease such as the flu, a cold, ringworm etc - this applies regardless of COVID19.
• If you are ever unsure, always seek qualified medical advice.
Character Policy
• Training at the Hobart Jujutsukan is considered a privilege, not a right.
• The number one consideration of the Hobart Jujutsukan is the safety of members, the dojo, and the wider community.
• The conduct of members reflects on the Hobart Jujutsukan.
• Members are encouraged to make positive contributions to their community and those around them.
• Hobart Jujutsukan will terminate the membership of those proven to be of poor character.

WARNING!
Jujutsu is inherently dangerous, just some of the risks and responsibilities of undertaking training are listed below – please give careful consideration to the following points before agreeing to accept the risks of training.
Your election to train indicates you have given thorough consideration to the implications of training in Jujutsu and you agree to release Hobart Jujutsukan, its agents, proprietors, parent company, officers, instructors, staff and other members from any liability whatsoever in connection with your participation in the required activities within the training programs. Without limitation, this includes any loss or damage or injury incurred as a direct or indirect result of your participation.
• Jujutsu includes falls, throws, takedowns, wrestling, striking, choking, strangulation, sparring, the use of weapons, training on different surfaces, training outdoors, training for realistic scenarios, adult themes, adult language, the use of dangerous weapons and other activities.
• It is likely during training a participant will occasionally suffer cuts, bruises, and sports-type injuries.
• Unlikely but possible injuries include damage to the head, neck or spine, back, face and eyes, throat, brain, internal organs, joints, bones, and muscles which can lead to invasive medical treatment, prolonged absence from work, catastrophic injury or death.
• Each participant must take due care towards the safety of themselves and other participants.
• Participants are at physical risk both during practice and outside of practice if they attempt to implement learned skills in real-world conflicts.
• Participants are at legal risk based on their actions both during practice and outside of practice if they attempt to implement learned skills in real-world conflicts.
• Participants are at psychological risk from criticism, failure, discomfort, and challenging positions & scenarios.
• Jujutsu requires close physical contact during training – this includes being grabbed around the neck and body and wrestling on the ground.
• The syllabus and assessment requirements will not be altered to accommodate an inability to meet a required standard or undertake a required practice based on capacity, disability, gender, cultural belief, or religious belief.
